THE OLD NIMITZ HOTEL
This building, erected in 1846, was razed in
1926 to make room for the modern Hotel Nim-
itz. It was in this old hotel, built in the shape
of a steamboat, that Fleet Admiral Chester
W. Nimitz received his inspiration for a "life
on the sea.'
