1730 JOSIAH WEDGWOOD 1795
Master Potter
Was born in Burslem, England, in 1730, the
youngest of a family of thirteen. Josiah was
sent to school at the age of six and at the
age of nine, after the death of his father was
apprenticed to his brother Thomas to learn
the Art of Potting.
His progress was rapid after he mastered
the Art of Potting. Success after success
came fast and he became the first Great
Industrialist.
Queen Charlotte, wife of George III com-
missioned him to do a complete Tea Service
for the palace, and from Catherine, Empress
of Russia, a commission to do the greatest
dinner service ever made by any potter.
Josiah Wedgwood was a friend to the Amer-
ican Colonies. He even used Cherokee Clay
from South Carolina and Pensacola Clay
from Florida in his portrait Medalions before
he died in 1795.
