FORT FISHER
The two largest land-naval battles of the Civil
War took place at Fort Fisher on December
24-25, 1864, and January 13-15, 1865.
Shown in the picture is a section of the land
defense composed of six earthen mounds (which
were 32 feet high alternating powder magazines
and bomb-proofs) and seven gun emplacements.
Fort Fisher was the largest earthwork fort in
the Confederacy and is located just below
Carolina Beach, N. C.
