In 1893 Edinburgh Cor-
poration purchased 11 of
the 18 route miles of horse
tramways developed since
1871 by the Edinburgh
Street Tramways Co. Ltd.
Three years later the Cor-
poration also purchased
the two cable
tramways
which had been inaugurated
in 1888 by the Edinburgh
Northern Tramways Com-
pany. All the tramways in
the City were then leased
to the Edinburgh & District
Tramways Co. Ltd. which
converted the horse tram-
ways to cable traction in the
following years.
