CANAL STREET, NEW ORLEANS
Canal Street in New Orleans is America's
widest business thoroughfare and is the divid-
ing line between the old city and the new.
It is 171 feet wide. The neutral ground and
sidewalks are paved with marble with deep
pink borders.
The lighting system is one of the longest
of its kind in the world, comprising 109
standards at 100 feet intervals. On the
columns are seals of France, Spain, Confe-
derate States and the United States, represent-
ing the four governments which have had
jurisdiction over New Orleans since the city
was founded in 1718.
Canal Street was named from the water-
way, since filled in, intended to connect the
Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain.
