The gold rush started here in 1859, when
a prospector struck gold bearing quartz in
Gregory Gulch, between Black Hawk and Central
City.
The fantastic wealth of Gilpin County's
85,000 acres was known as the richest square
mile on earth. It is estimated, the mines have
yielded more than 125 million dollars in metals,
since gold was first discovered.
