Women basic trainees with M-16 rifle on Range
9. All women trainees are required to qualify
with the M-16. The M-16 - the Army's
standard rifle - weighs 11½ pounds combat
ready, uses 5.56 mm ammunition and can be
fired semi-or fully-automatic. Fort Jackson, a
U.S. Army Training Center, is located in the
capital city of Columbia, S.C., and is named in
honor of President Andrew Jackson.
