This is one of the oldest of the seven
Hopi villages discovered by the conquer-
ing Spaniards of Coronado's army in 1540.
Scattered throughout the village are under-
ground chambers called kivas, in which the
men do most of their spinning, weaving, etc.,
where take place almost all of the sacred cere-
monies. Certain public ceremonies take place
on public squares or plazas: A corner of one
of them is shown in this picture. Myths and
tales that reach into a dim past are woven
around almost every nook and corner, bluff
and spring inside or outside of the Hopi vil-
lages. In the background on the first hill is
the village of Shupaulavi.
