Carving Stone Mountain
Additional Details:
Gutzon Borglum began work on the sculpture in 1923, and was able to complete General Robert E. Lee's head in January, 1924. A 1925 dispute brought work to a halt, and Borglum left the project to carve Mt. Rushmore. A second sculptor, Augustus Lukeman resumed work in 1925, and promptly replaced Borglum's work. By 1928 only Lukeman's version of Lee's head was finished, and the project was out of funds. |
