FIRST U.S. FOREST RANGER STATION, in the U.S., called the Alta Ranger Station, still stands in the long deserted gold camp of Alta, southeast of Darby, Montana. Congress authorized the President to set aside the first forest reserves in 1891. N. E. Wilkerson and H. C. Tuttle were among the first Rangers and in 1899, built this building in 15 days.
