YF-12A was developed as a high altitude Mach 3 interceptor for
defense against supersonic bombers. Although never operational, it
was forerunner of SR-71 high altitude strategic recon aircraft and set
speed and altitude records of 2,070 mph and 80,258 ft. in 1965.
YF-12A displayed at USAF Museum, W-PAFB, Ohio was flown there
in 1979.
