Additional Details:
Americans were shocked to hear of the bombing of Marine Headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, and were doubly overcome about the pictures of horrible devastation and days of hopeful digging for survivors. Americans mourned the over 240 dead as they thoughtfully weighed criticism of security measures versus Marine Corps orders to "keep a low profile." President Reagan bravely took the over-all responsibility for the incident, sending his stock soaring throughout the country and thus cutting off further Congressional wrangling. October 23, 1983
