The ancient Hopi Ceremonial, the Snake Dance is an annual custom of these Indians, held in their picturesque Pueblo, on a mesa overlooking the Painted Desert. The snakes are collected eight days prior to the ceremonies and stored in jars in the Snake Kiva (or sacred dwelling). Each of the colorful costumes represents its own individual dance and serves to interpret the gyrations of the wearer. They are known as the Yacca Skirt Dance, The Rug Dancer, The Rainbow Dancer, etc.
