The Oldest House in the United States. An old
adobe structure situated in the heart of the oldest district
of Santa Fe, New Mexico, seems to have a well supported
claim to distinction as the oldest house in the United
States. It is claimed that this house was standing when
Coronado discovered a native village upon the present site
of Santa Fé in 1540, forty-five years before the settlement.
of St. Augustine, Florida-and it is known to have at
least dated from the foundation of the Spanish City in
1598. Of late years the house has deteriorated, but every
effort is being made to preserve it.
