Portsmouth was established in 1752, by
William Crawford. The city's population today
is approximately 50,000. Among the interest-
ing things to see in Portsmouth are the Navy
Yard, Marine Barracks, Naval Hospital, Con-
federate Monument, Old Court House and
Trinity Episcopal Church. During the war be-
tween the states the Navy Yard was captured
and partly destroyed. Portsmouth also was in-
vaded by Lord Dunmore in 1776 when he
bombarded and burned Norfolk.
