Laguna (the lake) was founded is 1699 and is
the youngest of the pueblos with about 1,000
inhabitants. It is 66 miles West of Albuquerque
and is perched upon a sterile hill, in a compact
cluster. This form of habitation was the out-
come of the needs of the people. It is a fortress
and built with every eye alert to its defensive
qualities. The Pueblo Indians tilled the soil and
provided for their needs; their neighbors were
nomadic and warlike. The entrance was origi-
nally by means of a ladder to the roof of the low-
est story.
