Left: The equestrian statue of Washington, designed and exe-
cuted by Thomas Crawford, was unveiled in 1858. It is sur-
rounded by six other famous Virginia sons. The entire work is a
monument to Virginia's role in the Revolution. Top right: The
famous Houdon statue in the Capitol Rotunda. Bottom right: A
silhouette dramatizes the force of the equestrian statue.
