NORTHERN INDIANA CENTER FOR HISTORY
Mishawaka Federal Savings points with pride to the Northern Indiana Center for
History, a 10-acre site located in the West Washington National Historic District in
South Bend. Within one site, visitors experience three museums plus acres of
historic gardens. Copshaholm, the 1895-96 Romanesque mansion was built by the
Oliver Family, founders of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works. The 38-room mansion is
complete with original furnishings. The Oliver gardens include a tennis court, tea
house, pergola, sunken Italian gardens and more. Copshaholm's carriage house
serves as a visitor center. Copshaholm, the carriage house and the Oliver gardens
are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Worker's Home is a living
history museum that celebrates the region's cultural heritage. In the History Center
visitors learn about the region's history in the nine galleries which comprise the
permanent exhibition Voyages, Exploring the History of the St. Joseph Valley and
through visits to the changing exhibition galleries. The kidsfirst Children's Museum
provides activities related to the history of the region. The Northern Indiana Center
for History is owned and operated by the Northern Indiana Historical Society.
