SOUTHERN 722
Consolidation 722 stands ready_to take a National Railway Historical Society
excursion out of Roanoke, VA. The excursion, operated with Savannah & Atlanta
Pacific 750, was a circle trip over the Norfolk & Western, Southern and Virginian
railroads. The trip was run as the “Virginian" on August 28, 1971. During the end
of the steam era, the Southern Railway sold 722 and 630 to the East Tennessee &
Western North Carolina to become numbers 208 and 207 respectively. But during
the late 1960's when the Southern was looking for additional steam power for their
expanding fleet of excursion locomotives, the pair of Consolidations were brought
home in trade for a pair of diesel locomotives. The ET&WNC received newer loco-
motives and the Southern was the happy owner of two more steam locomotives.
