Southern Railway E8 6909 leads three sister locomotives and twelve cars, including
a dome car, out of New Orleans, LA as train No. 2, the northbound "Southern
Crescent" over the seven mile long Pontchartrain Trestle, July 19, 1978. The train
operates to Washington DC, arriving the following morning, with through cars to
New York City over Amtrak. Since Amtrak took over most of the nation's railroad
passenger service in May 1971, the Southern Railway opted to continue to run its
passenger trains. And it did, in the finest tradition. The “Southern Crescent" is the
only train to operate in the USA during the 1970's with a Master Bedroom, consist-
ing of two lower berths, one upper berth and shower facilities. As of February 1,
1979, the Southern Railway and Amtrak have agreed to let the latter operate the
“Crescent” as part of the nationwide system.
