NEW YORK CENTRAL 5328
It's December 1949 and a chill is in the air as the cool breezes blow in from the
Hudson River. The 4-6-4 steam locomotive standing at rest in front of the round-
house with clear white smoke drifting from the stack confirms the calendar date.
5328, one of the 275 Hudsons built for the New York Central, is waiting with a
full tender of coal at Harmon, N.Y. for the next assignment west. It's probably
a toss-up as to which class of Hudson was the best looking, the popular Jle, of
which the 5328 is a member, or the J3a, the Super Hudson. Nevertheless, it is
considered by most that the New York Central Hudson, named after the river it
runs beside on the "water level route", is the best looking steam locomotive built.
Those that don't agree are probably die-hard Pennsy fans. Of course the loco-
motive transported VIP's in name trains such as the “Twentieth Century Limited",
“Ohio State Limited”, “Empire State Express”, “Laurentian" and many others.
