SOUTHERN 2839
Royal Hudson 2839 lifts its consist out of Ashland, KY on the second day of a four
day trip to Greensboro, NC on July 5, 1979. The 718 mile trip was run as the
“Independence Limited". Southern Railway leased the former Canadian Pacific
semistreamliner for an initial period of two years. This welcome addition to their
stable of iron horses provided the capability of sustained passenger train speeds in
excursion service. 2839 was built as class H-1-c in 1937 by the Montreal Locomotive
Works for use on mainline passenger trains north of the border on such trains as
the “Dominion”. Although the Southern Railway favors a green color scheme for
their passenger locomotives, they opted to retain the classic wine red and gray
Canadian Pacific colors. The 4-6-4 steps out smartly on this summer day.
