PENNSYLVANIA 4877
Former Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 electric locomotive 4877 has its train of
stainless steel cars in tow, headed for New York. Train is No. 3360 out of
South Amboy, N.J., July 11, 1981. Less than a half a mile up the track the
restored locomotive will cross the Raritan River bridge. Restoration of this
"G", as they are fondly known, was made possible through the efforts of
NJ Transit, the owner, Conrail and the Jersey Central Railway Historical
Society. After preparation and work performed at Raritan, N.J. during
May, 4877 was rededicated in ceremonies held at South Amboy, N.J. on
June 13, 1981. 139 GG1's were built during the nine year period from
1934 to 1943. 4877 was assembled by the Pennsy in Altoona, January 1939.
In 1981 only thirteen units of the fleet remain active, owned by NJ Transit,
and generally operated on the New York to South Amboy run. Most of the
GGI's were painted the traditional Brunswick green, such as the restored
4935, but starting in 1952 ten were painted in Tuscan red. 4877, the
"Jersey G" was restored to resemble these ten locomotives. By 1982 the
GG1 era may be a memory.
