The largest operating steam locomotive in the country lays over for the night
at Green River, Wyo. during its trip to Railfair Sacramento 1981. Doubleheading
with Northern 8444, the Challenger made the trip west to California from
Cheyenne, Wyo. for the opening of the California State Railway Museum.
After the nine day opening celebration during May 1981, the pair of steamers
retraced their route back to Wyoming. Challenger 3985's return to service
was accomplished through the efforts of a group of Union Pacific employees
volunteering to rehabilitate the huge coal burning 4-6-6-4. The articulated
locomotive was built in 1943 in Schenectady, N.Y. by the American Loco-
motive Company.
