Streamline J class locomotive whistles through Westfield, N.Y. on the old Nickel Plate
main line. Norfolk & Western's big Northern steam locomotive departed Erie, Pa. for
Buffalo, N.Y. with a 25 car excursion train for a scenic ride through western New
York's grape country, August 11, 1984. Two round trips were operated this weekend
under the sponsorship of the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society, Inc. 611 was
placed back in active service in 1982 after almost twenty years of static display. Built
in 1950 as one of three post war J's, 611 saw service for a short period of only nine
years. Now, part of the Norfolk Southern's stable of iron horses, the 611 sees service
on the railroad's system of steel rails. In all probability, this is the first time a Norfolk
& Western I class locomotive visited New York State.
