SOUTHERN PACIFIC 4449
Let's go to the fair! And the best way to go is on a train behind a steam locomotive.
Southern Pacific GS-4 and a colorful orange, red and black train make up the consist
of the "Louisiana World's Fair Daylight" for the trip from Portland, Ore. to New
Orleans, La. and return. On May 6, 1984 the thirteen car train passes through
Marysville, Calif. enroute to New Orleans. Lima Locomotive Works built a group of
eighteen 4-8-4 GS-4 steam locomotives for the Southern Pacific Co. in 1941 and 1942.
These Daylight locomotives powered SP passenger trains on the west coast for many
years. 4449 was brought back to life twice, once for the American Freedom Train in
1976 and again in 1981 for the steam special to Sacramento, Calif. for the California
State Ra way Museum opening.
