SOUTHERN 4501
Mikado 4501 was the first of 400 2-8-2 locomotives the Southern Railway and its
subsidiary lines purchased starting in 1911. The Baldwin built locomotive served
faithfully until retired in 1948. Many of this type were scrapped during the late 40's
upon arrival of the diesel locomotive but 4501 escaped this fate, being sold to shortline
Kentucky & Tennessee. Sixteen years of service were spent for this coal hauling road.
In the mid 60's, the 2-8-2 was purchased by Paul Merriman, refurbished and entered
excursion service on the Southern Railway which continues into the 1980's. Mikado
4501 rests at Keysville, Virginia waiting to serve the Southern Railway for one of its
many excursions.
