THE HUDSON HIGHLANDER
Amtrak's weekday train from Grand Central Terminal, New York City to
Albany-Rensselaer, train number 77, travels north along its namesake Hudson River
after rounding the curve beyond the Peekskill station. The train consists of a standard
five car Rohr built Turboliner trainset. During the last half of 1976, seven of these
trainsets were delivered to Amtrak for use in the New York-Buffalo Empire Corridor
Service. Since being placed in service, improvements to track and signaling have
allowed increases in speed to 110 mph. These improvements now allow a two hour
eleven minute schedule for the morning express, The Storm King, to cover the 142
miles between Albany-Rensselaer to New York. The train pictured here, The Hudson
Highlander is seen on a bright July 3, 1986 day.
