METRO-NORTH
One of the evening commuter trains to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., train number 897, speeds
through the tunnel at Breakneck Mountain along the Hudson River. A pair of
Electro-Motive FL9's power the train as usual but today, August 29, 1986, one of the
four units painted in the New Haven colors does the honors up front. The General
Motor's Electro-Motive model FL9 was a unique locomotive. Designed to operate as a
straight electric locomotive on New York Central's third rail to Grand Central
Terminal, the locomotive has a diesel engine to power the traction motors through a
generator for normal operation. The New Haven received two groups of thirty
locomotives each. The first group delivered from October 1956 to November 1957 had
1750 h.p. and the second group, delivered June 1960 to November 1960, had 1800 h.p.
Although the FL9's are presently numbered in the 2000 series, the numbers do not
match the original 2000 series numbers for each locomotive as delivered to the New
Haven.
