NORFOLK & WESTERN RAILWAY
Double-headed steam locomotives make a beautiful sight! Especially if they are two big
machines such as the two Norfolk & Western locomotives pictured here tackling the
grade east of Roanoke, Va. Northern 611 and Articulated 1218 are going to pass under
the Blue Ridge Parkway as they travel east to Lynchburg with the National Railway
Historical Society's Outbound Convention Special on Sunday, August 2, 1987. These two
locomotives, built in the railroad's shops in Roanoke, are fine examples of modern
steam locomotive technology. The 611, a 4-8-4, was built in 1950, just prior to
dieselization by US railroads and the 1218, a 2-6-6-4, a war baby in 1943.
