SUSQUEHANNA 4002
In late June of 1988, General Electric delivered four new model B40-8 locomotives to
the Susquehanna, but because the Susquehanna took over directed service on the
Delaware & Hudson the units never made it home. Instead they were pressed into
service on the D&H. Here we see the lead of the four units, number 4002, on train
PYPO at Alplaus, N.Y. June 29, 1988, just after delivery. The Susquehanna numbering
system provides even numbers be assigned to locomotives that have multiple-unit
capabilities and odd numbers for those that cannot be MU'ed. Therefore, the four new
B40-8's were numbered 4002, 4004, 4006, and 4008. Unfortunately, one of the units,
4006, was damaged in a grade crossing accident during the National Railway Historical
Convention in July. It has been repaired and returned to service. In anticipation of
continued D&H operation, twenty additional B40's are on order.
