FERROCARRILES NACIONALES DE MEXICO DH-19
In 1967 the Delaware & Hudson Railroad purchased four Alco Model PA-1 passenger
locomotives from the Santa Fe. These four classic passenger diesel locomotives were
59, 60, 62 and 66 on the Santa Fe and built by Alco in the 1947-1948 era. Upon receipt
of the quartet, the D&H ran them through the paint shop, retaining the familiar war
bonnet design but in the standard D&H yellow and blue colors, numbered 16-19. D&H
president F. C. "Buck" Dumaine Jr. purchased the locomotives and a group of Rio
Grande Pullman built passenger cars to upgrade the service on the New York-Montreal
Laurentian and night train Montreal Limited. When Amtrak came into being the trains
died and the locomotives went into freight service. A rebuilding by Morrison-Knudson
placed the four back in passenger service on D&H-Amtrak Adirondack in the 70's.
Turbos replaced the units and they were then leased to the MBTA for commuter
service out of Boston in 1978. After this stint, the four went south to Mexico on long
term lease. The PA's suffered mechanical and wreck damage and were side-lined for
five years before the FPC realized the significance of the locomotives and allocated
funds for the rebuilding of one unit. DH-19 is seen here after the efforts of the
Empalme Shops, Sonora, on January 23, 1989 in Star Service blue paint scheme.
Passenger service is expected to start in the spring of 1989 between Guadalajara and
Nogales, Star Service.
