JAMES MONROE was born in Virginia on April 28, 1758.
He was elected by a large majority by the Republican party
which at this time changed its name to Democratic. On his
re-election he received 231 of the 232 electoral votes. He
promulgated the famous "Monroe Doctrine." He died July
4, 1831.
