CATACOMBS OF SAINT CALLISTUS
Foremost undoubtedly among the subter-
ranean regions of Rome stand the Cata-
combs of S. Callistus, so called after the
Pope who in the 3.rd Century had important
works carried on there. These Catacombs
have been brought out of the oblivion
in which they had lain for many centuries, by
long labourious and patient study of the sub-
ject, accompanied by accurately calculated
borings of the hill, enclosed between the
far-famed Appian way, the Ardeatine way
wich stands over from it and the Via
delle Sette Chiese (Way of the Seven Chur-
ches) which joins the other two.

detail however it may not be amiss to touch
on some few of the more important chambers
such as. The Chambers of the Sacraments
where on the walls are depicted symbolical
representations of the mysteries and cere-
monies believed and practised by the Catholic
