WILLEM VAN DE VELDE (1611-1693). Born at Leyden. Began life
as a sailor, but by the age of twenty had already turned to the painting of
marine subjects. Invited to England by Charles II, and is described on
his tombstone in St. James's, Piccadilly, as "painter of sea-fights to their
Majesties King Charles II and King James II."
