This 12-watt yellow sodium laser creates an artificial
"star" 90 kilometers above the ground. Light from the
laser guide-star is analyzed by sophisticated optics at
the telescope. This allows instant real-time correction
for atmospheric turbulence, and yields precise celestial
images that rival those from space telescopes. AUG 2001
