RANDSBURG, CALIFORNIA
This mining camp in the Rand Quadrangle was named for
the Rand gold-mining district in the Transvaal, South Africa.
Gold was first discovered in Goler Wash nine miles north-
west of the town, in 1893. Soon dry wash camps sprung
up with the richest mine, Yellow Aster producing over
$10,000,000 in gold by 1925. Other nearby towns of Jo-
hannesburg, named for the chief city of Transvaal, Atolia,
and Red Mountain complete the Rand Mountain camps.
