Washington National Airport officially opened June 16,
1941. 56 years later, July 27, 1997, the new terminal
officially opened. Architect Cesar Pelli designed the new
terminal, which is part of a $1 billion renovation program
at National (the new terminal cost $450 million). The
concourse is 1,600 feet long and includes 54 "Jeffersonian"
domes. $5.5 million worth of artwork can be found
throughout the building. Three piers, with 35 gates for
airline passengers, come off the concourse.
