The outermost layer of the Earth is broken up into a dozen or more solid rock slabs
(called tectonic plates) that are moving slowly relative to one another. These motions
are illustrated by this artist's conception of a slice into the Earth from the wall map
"This Dynamic Planet: World Map of Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Impact Craters, and
Plate Tectonics" by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Smithsonian Institution,
and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

The theory of plate tectonics, developed in the 1960s, is now widely
accepted as the unifying concept that best explains how our Earth
works. A 77-page USGS booklet ("This Dynamic Earth: The Story of
Plate Tectonics") complements the wall map "This Dynamic Planet" and
describes in non-technical language how earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and energy and mineral resources relate to plate-tectonic
processes. (Call 1-888-ASK-USGS for ordering information).
