Forest comprises 40,000 acres of virgin bush, and many fine
specimens of kauri may be seen from the road that tra-
verses it. A few minutes' walk from this delightful picnic
dell, with its canopy of tree ferns, stands the giant kauri,
"Tane Mahuta". This magnificent tree has a girth of 43
feet, contains 72,000 superficial feet of timber and is
estimated to be 1,200 years old.
