THE WHARF, WHITIANGA, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, N.Z.
The first site for a wharf was across the river. Built of
hewn stone for Gordon Browne, manager of a kauri spar
station founded in the early 1830s, it was probably the first
stone wharf in Australasia. The present wharf is used by
yachts, power boats, commercial fishing launches and deep
sea fishing vessels. Marlin, sharks, tuna, and kingfish are
proudly hoisted ashore by the Mercury Bay Game Fishing
Club.
