HARBOUR BRIDGE TOLL PLAZA, AUCKLAND, N.Z. As far
back as 1860 a scheme was proposed to build a pontoon
bridge between Stokes Point, Northcote and Fanshawe
Street, Auckland. In 1946 a Royal Commission advocated
the building of the present bridge. In 1949 the consultant
engineers and the New Zealand Commissioner of Works
began discussions that set a team of design engineers and
draughtsmen to work for many months preparing plans. In
October, 1954, a contract was signed to build a bridge of
cantilever and suspended spans 3,348 feet long with a top
height of 211 feet and weighing 5,670 tons. The bridge
was opened in May, 1959. To-day, an average of 22,000
vehicles passes daily through the Toll Plaza.
