Florida has its State Capitol in the city of Tallahassee,
which was selected principally on account of its advan-
tageous location from a geographical standpoint. Florida,
often called the "Peninsular State," has an area of 58,680
square miles, and was admitted to the Union in 1845. The
State flower is the japonica. Florida was so named, in 1512,
by Ponce de Leon, because it was discovered on Easter
Sunday, which, in Spanish, is designated "Pascua Florida."
