Additional Details:
Goldfield, discovered soon after the turn of the century, sent the nation mining mad. Tonopah's silver discovery came in 1900 while gold was discovered in 1903 to the south. Some ore ran as high as $1,500 to $4,000 per ton. The first strike was made by Harry Stimler and Bill Marsh who were doing little in Tonopah. The gaming spots were the best, but none was like the glamour spot of Tex Rickards that occupied the ground floor of the Goldfield Hotel. Brokerage houses, assay office and a stock exchange lined the streets. Rickard brought in Wyatt Earp as floor boss and dealer for his Northern. Death Valley Scotty ran an assay office that some said was a bliind to deal in high grade. The panic of 1907 was the first blow to hit the town.
