The eleventh LPH (Landing Platform Helicopter)
built to implement the technique of vertical en-
velopment assault with Marine troops. Named for
the famous battle of the War of 1812, NEW
ORLEANS was constructed at the Philadelphia
Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and
commissioned 16 November 1968.
