Upon the abundance of mackerel (Scomber scombrus) depends the economic welfare of
many American citizens on both sides of the continent. On the Atlantic Coast, Scom-
ber scombrus is found; on the Pacific Coast the common mackerel is scientifically termed
Pneumatophorus diego, which is closely related to the Japanese mackerel, Scomber japonicus. About
400,000 barrels of mackerel are salted by the Massa-
chusetts fleet, annually, while on the Pacific Coast the eggs. The eggs are buoyant, due to the presence in
