ORIGINAL HENRIK HUDSON FLAG
HE first European visitor to this State
and City was Hudson, who in 1609,
sailed up the river now bearing his
name. The flag under which he
sailed was that of the Dutch East
India Company, which was the flag of
the United Provinces of the Netherlands-Orange,
White and Blue, arranged in three equal horizontal
stripes, in the center of the white stripe the letters A.
V. O. C.-The Vereenigde Oost-Indische Com-
pagnie-United East India Company, The A
indicating that the ship was sent out by the Amster-
dam Chamber of this company.
