FORT ROCK OF PEMAQUID
Longfellow has called Plymouth Rock "The Cor-
ner Stone of a Nation," so this may be termed The
Foundation Rock of a Nation. Visited by English
Colonists 13 years before the Pilgrims landed at Ply-
mouth. Three nations have contended about it for
supremacy on this continent. The only spot in the
United States where four forts have been erected and
destroyed, and the first taken by bombshell. Here
remain the foundations of the first stone Castle built
in New England.
The Old Fort Mansion Cache. Buried Paved
Streets, Remains of Ancient Wharf, and over 300
Walled Cellars, buried within a gunshot of the "Old
Rock," are of interest to all visitors.
