"Polk Place"-Home of James K. Polk. James K.
Polk, eleventh President of the United States, was born
near Pineville, Mecklenburg Co., N.C., on Nov. 2d, 1795.
He was graduated from the University of North Carolina
in 1818, and in 1824 was married to Sarah Childress.
Before the expiration of his term of office (1845-49) he pur-
chased a house in Nashville, and here he died on June 15th,
1849. His remains are buried beneath a temple erected on
the grounds. Mrs. Polk continued to live here until her
death in 1891.
