During the Battle of Springfield in the American Revolution this church was subjected to heavy flac and is known all over the country as the church or the militant parson, James Caldwell, who during a shortage of gun wadding ran out with hymnois and uttered his famous remark, "Give 'em Watts, boys!" The Parsonage, Union, N. J. (1782) original building burned by the British after murder of Hannah Caldwell, wife of Rev. James Caldwell, killed by British soldier, June 7, 1780.
